Research Your Options
Start by researching universities and courses that match your interests and qualifications. Use UCAS course search, university websites, and our university profiles to explore options. Consider factors like location, course content, entry requirements, and career outcomes.
Tips
- Use our university profiles to compare partner institutions
- Attend virtual open days and webinars
- Check entry requirements against your predicted grades
- Consider multiple backup options across different grade requirements
Register on UCAS Hub
Create an account on the UCAS Hub portal. If you're applying through a school or college, they'll provide a "buzzword" to link your application. Independent applicants can register directly. Make sure to use an email address you check regularly.
Tips
- Use a professional email address
- Save your login details securely
- Enable email notifications for important updates
Important
- Don't create multiple accounts - this can cause issues with your application
Complete Personal Details
Fill in your personal information accurately, including contact details, nationality, and fee status. International students need to specify their country of residence and indicate if they need a student visa. Double-check all spellings and ensure passport names match exactly.
Tips
- Use your full legal name as shown on your passport
- Provide multiple contact numbers if possible
- Keep your nominated access contact informed
Add Your Education History
Enter all your qualifications including current studies and any previously completed courses. Include all subjects, grades (or predicted grades), and exam dates. International qualifications need to be entered accurately with NARIC equivalencies if available.
Tips
- Include all relevant qualifications, not just main subjects
- Add English language test results (IELTS/TOEFL) if available
- Check university requirements for specific subject combinations
Important
- Never falsify grades - universities verify qualifications and false information leads to application rejection
Choose Your Five Courses
Select up to five courses to apply for. You can choose different courses at different universities, or the same course at five different universities. For medicine, dentistry, and veterinary science, you can only apply to four courses, with one non-restricted choice.
Tips
- Mix aspirational, realistic, and backup choices
- Check if courses require interviews or admissions tests
- Consider living costs and location alongside course quality
- Look at course structure - modular vs. linear assessment
Important
- Oxford and Cambridge applications are mutually exclusive - you cannot apply to both in the same year
Write Your Personal Statement
Your personal statement is your opportunity to stand out. In 4,000 characters (approximately 47 lines), explain why you want to study your chosen subject, demonstrate your passion and relevant experience, and show you've researched the course. This single statement goes to all five universities.
Tips
- Start with a compelling opening that hooks the reader
- Use specific examples to demonstrate skills and knowledge
- 80% should focus on your subject interest, 20% on extracurriculars
- Have multiple people proofread for errors and feedback
- Show you understand what the course involves
Important
- UCAS uses similarity detection - never copy from online samples
- Don't lie or exaggerate - you may be asked about it at interview
Request Your Reference
Your referee (usually a teacher or academic advisor) will provide a reference about your academic ability and suitability for university study. Give them plenty of notice and provide information about your courses and achievements to help them write a strong reference.
Tips
- Ask your referee at least 4-6 weeks before the deadline
- Provide a summary of your achievements and aspirations
- Check they've submitted before the deadline
Pay and Submit
Review your entire application carefully before submitting. The application fee is approximately 27.50 (2025/26 rates). Once submitted, you'll receive offers, interviews, and decisions through UCAS Track over the following months.
Tips
- Preview your application and check for errors
- Submit well before the deadline - don't risk technical issues
- Keep checking UCAS Track for university responses
- Respond to offers by the specified deadline
